He’s got jokes: Trump promised to end war in Ukraine before taking office

Throughout his presidential campaign, President-elect Donald Trump made extraordinary assertions about his ability to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine. His bold promise to swiftly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict has failed to materialize as he prepares to take office in less than 14 hours. Despite his repeated claims during the campaign that he could resolve the war within 24 hours, even before his inauguration, the conflict continues to rage on with no immediate end in sight.

Trump to supporters: Suckers!!!!!

Yes, he claimed he could end the conflict within 24 hours, and resolve the war before even becoming president. He also boasted of his relationships with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He’s quite a negotiator, indeed.

Donald Trump has made numerous false or misleading statements throughout his political career, particularly during his presidency and subsequent campaigns. He lied about the 2020 Presidential Election being stolen, has frequently stated that he signed the “biggest tax cuts in history,” and repeatedly misrepresented the impact of tariffs on China, claiming that China was paying billions in tariffs to the U.S. In reality, American importers bear the costs of these tariffs. For those Americans who still don’t know how tariffs work, rest assured they will when prices for groceries surge.

He also lied about being Michigan’s Man of the Year, his inauguration’s crowd size, and so many other items.

Back to Ukraine….
As Inauguration Day approaches, Trump has significantly moderated his stance on the war. He now suggests that he will bring Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table, rather than instantly ending the war. This shift reflects the complex realities of the ongoing conflict and Trump’s indifference to lying.

The Russia-Ukraine War continues to be a brutal and costly conflict. Russian forces are reportedly losing around 1,500 troops per day in the eastern Donbas region. Ukraine has recently advanced in Kursk Oblast, while Russian forces have made gains near several key areas including Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, and Pokrovsk. The conflict has expanded, with both sides launching strikes on each other’s territories, including oil refineries and military installations.

Great job, Trump!

The ongoing war, which remains fiercely contested, holds profound geopolitical implications. It involves major entities like NATO, the EU, and other influential global powers. Grasping its impact is essential for shaping future international relations and securing global stability.

As the complexities of the situation become apparent, Trump’s team has adjusted their timeline and expectations. Trump now hopes to have six months to work on resolving the conflict, rather than the initially promised 24 hours.

Just a slight difference, there.

Trump’s chosen envoy to Ukraine, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, has set a goal of reaching a peace deal within 100 days and the focus has shifted from an immediate resolution to bringing the parties to the negotiating table. That would be a start, but it’s far from a guarantee of a peaceful resolution.

Both Russia and Ukraine have invested heavily in the conflict, making compromises difficult. However, Western sanctions on Russia are beginning to have significant effects, potentially influencing negotiation stances.

Will Russia eventually relent?

While Trump’s campaign promises of a swift end to the war have not been realized, the incoming administration still maintains that it will prioritize finding a resolution to the conflict. However, the realities on the ground suggest that any peace process will likely be complex and time-consuming, requiring careful diplomacy and potentially difficult compromises from all parties involved.
