Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts can help protect physically disabled employees. DEI policies and procedures can encourage the participation of people with disabilities in the workplace
How ironic?
Governor Greg Abbott, who uses a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury suffered in 1984, has taken a strong stance against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies in Texas. On February 1, 2025, Abbott issued an executive order banning DEI policies across all Texas state agencies.
Abbott argues that DEI programs “divide us rather than unite us” and deviate from constitutional principles. He believes that every Texan should be treated equally under the law, without discrimination based on race. The governor’s order directs state agencies to eliminate any form of DEI policies and to focus on merit-based advancement1. This executive order builds upon previous actions taken by Abbott and the Texas legislature:
In 2023, Senate Bill 17 was passed, banning DEI practices at Texas public universities. And in January 2025, Abbott expressed his intention to extend the DEI ban to K-12 public schools.
Despite being a wheelchair user himself, Abbott’s stance on DEI policies has been consistent across various groups, including people with disabilities. His personal experience with disability has not led him to support DEI initiatives aimed at increasing representation for marginalized groups, including those with disabilities.
FACT: DEI efforts can include providing reasonable accommodations for employees with PHYSICAL DISABILITIES, like Abbott.

Interestingly, while opposing DEI policies, Abbott has supported other initiatives focused on people with disabilities. The Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities works towards equal access and opportunities for Texans with disabilities. And the annual Texas HireAbility campaign raises awareness about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.
Interesting! That looks a lot like DEI doesn’t it?
Isn’t it understandable to feel a bit conflicted about his stance?
Abbott’s stance on DEI has understandably sparked debate and criticism. Supporters of DEI argue that these policies help address systemic inequalities and provide opportunities for underrepresented groups. Critics of Abbott’s decision worry that it could set back efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in various sectors, including education and employment.
As the debate continues, the full impact of Abbott’s executive order on state agencies and programs, particularly those relying on federal funding for DEI initiatives, remains to be seen.
