According to recent research, a significant portion of Protestant churchgoers believe it is acceptable to occasionally miss church services to watch sports or attend sporting events. A Lifeway Research study found that around 3 in 4 (74%) U.S. Protestant churchgoers believe it’s acceptable to skip church for kids’ sports at least occasionally.

Specifically, 22% say it’s acceptable once or twice a year while 39% say it’s acceptable a few times a year. Thirteen percent say it’s acceptable many times a year. Only 18% of Protestant churchgoers say it is never acceptable to miss church for sports.
There are some demographic differences in attitudes: Younger churchgoers tend to be more accepting of missing church for sports compared to older generations. Those under 35 are more likely than those 50 and older to say it’s acceptable many times a year (26% vs. 7%).
Second, more frequent church attendees are less accepting of skipping church for sports compared to less frequent attendees.
And third, pastors tend to be less accepting than churchgoers. 36% of Protestant pastors say it’s never acceptable to miss church for sports, compared to only 18% of churchgoers.
While many churchgoers see occasional absences for sports as acceptable, skipping church frequently for sports remains controversial.
Church leaders express concern about the impact on attendance and spiritual formation, especially for families with children involved in youth sports. However, some see opportunities for outreach and discipleship through sports involvement when balanced appropriately with church participation.
My opinion: It’s important to consider that most churchgoers deserve a break. Regular attendance and active participation in church activities can be demanding, and offering them some respite could lead to renewed energy and deeper engagement. By providing this opportunity for rest, we not only support their well-being but also foster a more vibrant and committed community.
For those considering skipping Sunday services to catch an important sports event, there are compelling alternatives to maintain your spiritual routine. You might organize a ‘make-up’ church night with fellow like-minded members earlier in the week or the following week, especially if you’re part of a larger congregation. Alternatively, dedicating an hour or two for personal Scripture study at another time during the week can be equally fulfilling. Moreover, with numerous podcasts and videos available, you could enjoy a T.D. Jakes or Joyce Meyer sermon on a Wednesday or Thursday evening from the comfort of your home. And lastly, there are many close-knit online church groups that could be used as an occasional alternative when you miss a Sunday.
With just one, two, or three hours set aside during your week, staying consistent in your faith journey is entirely achievable even when you miss attending your weekly Sunday service.
